ZIMBABWE



Zimbabwe is a land of many contradictions. It has one of Africa's richest histories going back as long as 50,000BC, but has been mired in controversy due to the strong hand of Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe's former leader of 37 years. Once a very rich country, Zimbabwe has recently been plagued with inflation as high as 231 million percent. Despite its poverty, its culture, customs, and landscape are as rich as any nation.

Ethnic Groups: African 99.4% (predominantly Shona; Ndebele is the second largest ethnic group), other 0.4%, unspecified 0.2% (2012 est.)
Religions: Protestant 74.8% (includes Apostolic 37.5%, Pentecostal 21.8%, other 15.5%), Roman Catholic 7.3%, other Christian 5.3%, traditional 1.5%, Muslim 0.5%, other 0.1%, none 10.5% (2015 est.)
Languages: Shona (official; most widely spoken), Ndebele (official, second most widely spoken), English (official; traditionally used for official business), 13 minority languages (official; includes Chewa, Chibarwe, Kalanga, Koisan, Nambya, Ndau, Shangani, sign language, Sotho, Tonga, Tswana, Venda, and Xhosa)

Home to one of the world's largest and most breathtaking waterfalls, Zimbabwe is one of Africa's most beautiful countries. Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe's controversial former leader was Africa's oldest and most decorated leaders. Despite being plagued with poverty, Zimbabwe has Africa's highest literacy rate. It also has the highest nuimber of official languages at 16 and due to hyperinflation and the adoption of foreign currencies, Zimbabwe has the highest number of official currencies with 8.
